Formamide is a clear, colorless liquid with a weak ammonia-like odor. It is miscible with water and alcohols, slightly soluble in benzene and ether, and hygroscopic, so drums should be resealed immediately after sampling.
Formamide has a melting point of 2.55 °C and a boiling point of 210-212 °C, with partial decomposition beginning at 180 °C. Its flash point is 154 °C (closed cup), and its specific gravity is 1.1334 at 20 °C. Decomposition releases ammonia and hydrogen cyanide, so storage areas must be ventilated and kept away from oxidants, acids, and bases.

Every batch is sampled before release and receives a Certificate of Analysis (COA) with the values from the specification table. Retained samples are stored for two years.
